MANGA WORLD 3
January 1994 : Graphics and Program - sunteam_paul : Music - sunteam_phil
Never content to rest on my laurels, I pushed everything a bit farther for Manga World 3. This demo adds a couple of full screen animations that I think worked out really well. It also contains some extras at the end - a recreation of the opening to The Super Shinobi in miniature (made to look like a Sega Game Gear) and a Janken match with characters from Tonari no Totoro.

The PC Engine CD-Rom System screen, this time without a sampled jingle as I was pushed for disk space. Still, it's pretty amazing what you can get out of one floppy.

Check out the video for the animation of the title screen, it's very cool, and all done with colour cycling. I stole the idea from Dungeon Explorer 2 on the PC Engine. |
This was a first for me - a proper full screen animation. Surprisingly easy to do but it looks very effective. It's taken from the gloriously violent Fist of the North Star movie. |

Oh My Goddess! characters, nice amount of detail. |
Mecha is always cool, and this is from Gundam. |
The ever popular Sailor Moon. |
Riding Bean. A great little anime that deserved more than a single OAV.
Every slideshow has to have a bit of Dragon Ball in it.
A nicely detailed scene from Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Always wanted to see this, still haven't. |
Just for giggles I dropped in a picture of Chibi Maruko-chan. |
Ginrei from Giant Robo. |
Another full screen animation, Lum from Urusei Yatsura does a very effective blink. |
Patlabor's Noa Izumi. |
Great character design from Studio Ghibli for Umi ga Kikoeru, commonly known nowadays as Ocean Waves. |
Lilia and Adol character designs from the Ys II anime. |
GS Mikami. I saw an episode of this at a convention years ago. Kind of fun but not as good as I'd hoped. |
A shot of Nadia from The Secret of Blue Water which was the big thing at that time. |
This is from Mikan's Diary. I have no clue what it was, but I thought the cats were cute. |
Bubblegum Crisis. I should have been more ambitious and done the whole power suit. |
Another hot property of the time, basketball anime/manga Slam Dunk. |
Here my love of the Master System shines through with a recreation of the opening animation (including sound effect) of Zillion. |
Omake means 'extra' or 'bonus' in Japanese, just so you know. |
Check the video for the whole sequence of this. Replicating games as if played on a Sega Game Gear became somewhat of a habit with us. We drew up a few backgrounds and sprites for The Super Shinobi (seen elsewhere on this site) but it became apparent that it would never happen, so the opening, copied as faithfully as possible, was stuck on the end here, sans music. |
This was a bit of fun. With a style inspired by the janken match in the second Gunbuster game on the PC Engine, I decided to use characters from Totoro. It's rock hard to win a match, but you get a nice picture when you do (see below). |
